This alteration and addition for one of Sydney’s leading food and lifestyle magazine editors focused on creating a generous centralized kitchen inserted in between two large existing living spaces. An attic master bedroom, second bedroom and bathroom were added to the upper storey. Alterations and additions were contained to a modest 19 square metre footprint to meet the budget.
Allowing an abundance of natural light and ventilation into the existing living areas and providing privacy from the towering apartment building behind the site were a priority, which was achieved by opening all spaces in the house onto the central courtyard which was extended into a “U” shape and landscaped.
The front façade and overall appearance was unaltered to maintain the consistency of the heritage-listed row of terraces. Careful consideration was placed towards integrating the new upper floor bedrooms and bathroom into the existing roof whilst responding to the contextual roof forms.
The new works were designed to read as a clear new insertion into the centre of the house using contemporary materials such as recycled vertical hardwood timber cladding boards and louvre strip windows, establishing a clear distinction between the old and the new.
