This renovation to a federation semi-detached house required the rectification of a series of small rooms to the rear of the house disconnecting the backyard from the living spaces of the house.
The front façade and two bedrooms were retained, the existing living space was converted into a third bedroom with dual access bathroom/ensuite and a new addition was sleeved onto the rear to create an open plan kitchen, dining and living space.
The primary concept was to create a dramatic floating roof that projected out well beyond the rear wall, framing the view towards large eucalyptus trees in the rear yard and drawing their presence into the living room. This roof was designed to shade high level glazing wrapping around three sides to the open living spaces to let in an abundance of natural light to the main living spaces and to allow cooling breezes from the east to ventilate the house. Suspended screens protect the house from overheating and a concealed on site rainwater tank reticulated water throughout the house.
The structure to the projecting roof was concealed creating a clean-lined continuous ceiling between the inside and outside, blurring the boundaries between internal and external, accentuating the seamless connection to the rear courtyard.
