This terrace house, located on a tiny site close to Sydney CBD contained many of the usual terrace house constraints including a south facing rear yard, a poorly conceived rear addition and significant overlooking from apartment buildings directly behind and to the west of the site.
Tanna Green Architects embraced these constraints to create a wedge shaped kitchen and dining extension that terminated in an enclosed fireplace repositioning the opening to the rear courtyard away from significant overlooking. The polished concrete floor extends to a private courtyard with a green landscaped wall screened by the neighbouring onlookers by the house itself and borrowing living space from the outside.
The roof of the extension was separated from the existing two storey building line creating distinction between the old and the new. A high-level window inserted into this roof provides additional ambient light into the rear extension and a unique view to the rear wall of the terraces and street trees beyond.
